Why I’m Involved…
Being involved in OYEA has meant a lot to me, because it reminds me that I am a part of something. I know that in the future, when The Spot youth center is up and running, I’ll be able to tell my children (or maybe even grandchildren) that I helped it start up. I helped with the naming process, the t-shirts, and deciding on the logo. The youth center will be physical proof that I made an impact in my community, and it will forever be a reminder of my love for Oakland.
Having a youth center in Oakland’s Chinatown would help so many young people in many ways. It will provide free opportunities for youth to learn something new, participate in a fun workshop, or receive simple college help. Getting educational help is the most important aspect to me, because if people receive the free help they need to succeed educationally, they will be guaranteed a better future. The Spot youth center is meant to be a safe space where opportunities are endless. - By Ratema Uch
