Programs: Ready for the Future

The Spot’s purpose is to prevent violence and foster healthy transitions into adulthood by promoting positive youth development through activities that build young people’s competence in multiple arenas, as well as develop their confidence, connection to people and institutions, character, and compassion.  The theme is “Ready for the Future” and The Spot’s culturally attuned activities will include tiered mentorship, leadership roles, and internships for youth to gain knowledge and skills in health and wellness, history and culture, job training/college readiness, and leadership.  Instead of merely being a space with co-located services, The Spot will be coordinated to provide a web of support and opportunities for youth and young adults.  This web of support requires both a strong infrastructure for administrative as well as program coordination plus anchor partners with youth development expertise in program provision in the content areas.

Program Approaches

Under The Spot’s theme of “Ready for the Future”, the three core content areas of focus are: Job Training & College Readiness; Arts, Culture and Heritage; and Health and Wellness

The Spot utilizes the following strategies throughout the core program areas:

  • Address the strengths and needs of all youth and young adults through age and culturally appropriate programming
  • Cross sector and cross agency partnerships to maximize resources and provide seamless support to clients
  • Engage youth and young adults in gradually advancing levelsof peer to peer leadership, education, and outreach
  • Integrate advocacy and empowerment approaches into service provision
  • Integrate health and wellness where appropriate
  • Intergenerational relationship building

Current Programming

Oakland Youth Empowering Advocates (OYEAs)

OYEAs are the youth advisory council for the CYCI. Members consist of youth and young adults ages 14 to 21. As the youth leadership for the youth center, they offer the youth perspective for the overall vision of The Spot, include participate in key planning decisions, identify appropriate peer to peer outreach and publicity, and serve as the youth spokespeople for The Spot. They engage in a yearlong curriculum of leadership development, conflict resolution training, violence prevention, and other issues that will support their role as the advisory council for The Spot.

Warriors for Peace (WFP)

The WFP program works with youth and young men of color to tell a digital story about their own personal experiences with violence in their lives, families, and communities. These youth benefit from the services provided by the CYCI through learning to develop competency, confidence, connection, character, and compassion by creating a digital story using their personal experiences, planning the screening event, working with the mental health provider, learning about other participants’ experiences. This program is delivered in collaboration with Youth Movement Records and Community Health for Asian Americans and is funded by the Kaiser Permanente Foundation.

Asian Health Services Youth Program – Peer Leaders Program

The Peer Leaders Program is an eight-month program during the school year where youth (8th-12th graders) participate in weekly trainings on various reproductive health topics, practice public speaking, hone leadership skills, and conduct health outreach and workshops. Participants receive a monthly stipend throughout the program. In terms of time frame, the program would be ongoing (it runs October-May).

Asian Pacific Islander Youth Promoting Advocacy and Leadership (AYPAL)
Voices of Oakland Youth for Community Empowerment (VOYCE)
Southeast Asian Youth Community in Action (SEAYCA)

VOYCE & SEAYCA are site specific programs of AYPAL that work with low-income API youth in Oakland to build grassroots leadership and power to transform school and neighborhood inequities so that all youth can be healthy, safe and thriving members of their communities. Both VOYCE & SEAYCA hold weekly Youth Leadership Organization (YLO) meetings to provide a safe place where young people (ages 13-19) are valued and where youth are prepared to be leaders for positive social change. In these youth-led membership organizations, young people develop strong relationships with their peers and adult allies through community building activities, peer education workshops, cultural arts projects, grassroots campaigns, and community service initiatives.

Lincoln Square Recreation Center (LSRC) – Satellite Recreation Programming

The Spot partners with LSRC to host satellite recreational events, such as The Spot Olympics, to reach out to out of program youth that tend to come to LSRC to play basketball or engage in other playground activities. These recreational events involve activities such as basketball, four square, trivia and other games that encourage team building and good sportsmanship among peers.
